How bad is DWI ? you need to have a lawyer? Please opinions?

I met this nice guy about 3 month ago, he is right now my boyfriend…but what do u think about this? he told me that about 4 years ago he got a DWI for drive and drinking, he said was just once, he made a big mistake, he went to a party and the police stop him and he got some beers…but he said that he needed a lawyer and it is true that for DWI you need a lawyer and is a misdeamanor offense..because the other day he was trying to complete an application for a civil service test and he said that one of those questions he has to answer YES…because dwi is not a minor traffic violation, is more than that? Is true? can somebody have the experience before with DWI? EXPLAIN TO ME please..Im get prescription drugs without prescription not sure if he is hidden something or he is telling me the truth…is so bad one DWI or maybe he got more than one it is why he need a lawyer..???

You do need a lawyer for a DWI yes. Other than that what the hell are you asking? Word your question where people can understand it and it makes just a little sense.
ALCOHOL effects your judgement, and is a depressant. It only takes a split second to KILL somebody on the road and then you would be looking at manslaughter (definitely PRISON time) and if you have an accident under the influnce of any mind altering substance and someone just gets injured, it is a FELONY. I would be more worried about this than having to hire a lawyer. After all it is a lawyers livelyhood so more that likely any lawyer will tell you that you need one.
The first DWI conviction in NY is a misdemeanor (you don’t say what state, so I’ll use mine for example) … the 2nd conviction comes in as a felony!
Yes, he should have a lawyer to help him with his case.
Yes, the conviction for DWI would have a negative effect on a civil service application.
Yes, just one DWI can have very big effects on your future!
