Some people are just like that. You meet them and know them for only a short time and they make a large impact on your life and many times, you don’t even realize it until they are gone. Then you feel bad because you never got a chance to thank them and tell them how important they were to you during the short time you knew them.

It sounds like you are experiencing a sense of loss, because deep inside, you really appreciated what this man did for you. It is normal to feel sad when someone who made a huge impact on your life passes away. You are obviously a better person for knowing this man, so honor him by continuing on your new path.

its normal to be upset when anyone that you know dies even if you didnt like them all that much it still makes you feel sad because you had a connection with that person.
